Now Playing
Before Dream Girls launched the career of Jennifer Hudson, it was a bright light on the Broadway stage in 1981, winning six Tony Awards after being nominated for fourteen. The musical sensation captures the rise of The Dreams, a Motown girl trio drawing inspiration of such R&B stars from the 1960s as The Supremes, James Brown, Jackie Wilson and The Shirelles. Dream Girls includes priceless hits like “One Night Only,” “Listen” and “And I Am Telling You” that will leave you singing long after the final curtain close. Robert Longbottom handles directing responsibilities, and Academy Award nominee Henry Kriger takes on music and lyrics. Dream Girls is heading to San Francisco’s Curran Theatre on August 24 – September 26.
Starts October 27th
The revival of Broadway’s classic West Side Story returns to the road to tour North America. Under the direction of Tony Award winner Arthur Laurents, West Side Story features the original choreography of Jerome Robbins and songs that have evolved into Broadway standards like “Tonight,” “America,” “Somewhere,” “Something’s Coming” and “I Feel Pretty.” The Broadway cast album from West Side Story took home the Grammy for Best Musical Show Album at the 2010 awards ceremony. Music for the production is by Leonard Bernstein (lyrics) and Stephen Sondheim (lyrics). West Side Story is set to take Wicked’s long-running spot at San Francisco’s Orpheum Theatre from October 27 through November 28.

Shrek | Orpheum Theatre
Starts December 1st
Drawn from the Oscar-winning animated film by DreamWorks studios, Shrek the Musical shines a spotlight on everyone’s favorite green ogre. This hilarious take on the Shrek fairy tale translates to the stage seamlessly and includes all your favorite characters from motor mouth donkey to spunky princess Fiona. The stage version was penned by David Lindsay-Abaire with 19 fresh songs provided by Janine Tesori. Shrek will keep the whole family laughing in stitches when it lands in San Francisco’s Orpheum Theatre this holiday season, playing from December 1 through January 2.
Starts January 25st
“Next to Normal”, one of the few – if not the first – Broadway musicals that revolves around a complex mental illness – Bipolar disorder – and tackles how the affected suburban family deals through the ordeal of one family member’s sudden change in temperament and perspective, is finally going on a national tour starting this fall in Los Angeles, till July 2011 in Charlotte, NC. One of the production’s first stops at the start of the New Year is at the Curran Theater in San Francisco from January 25 until February 20.

Rock of Ages | Curran Theatre
Starts March 8th
It was the decade of big hair, ultra-loud guitar solos, leather-clad rockers and the dawning of the “MTV era” when aspiring rocker Drew and Kansas-bred Sheree were struck by love at first screech of the distorted guitar at the Bourbon Bar along Sunset Strip. This is the story of the Broadway hit “Rock of Ages”, set in the time where the music of the likes of Bon Jovi, Journey, REO Speedwagon and others were sort of the everyday anthems of those enslaved by pop culture. “Rock of Ages” will also be bringing some nostalgic heavy head banging in San Francisco when it comes to the Curran Theater for a limited run from March 8 to April 3, 2011.

Blue Man Group | Golden Gate Theatre
Starts May 21st
Catch the black-clad voiceless, hairless, and earless “Blue Men” as they perform their comedic antics and musical performances using multimedia, visual effects and a variety of musical instruments ranging from drums to air poles to pipes and tubes to strings while adapting famous songs and scores from movies and TV shows and leave everyone in an ecstatic state of bliss and awe. It is for this same reason that USA Today calls the production an “absolutely ecstatic experience”. The Blue Man Group will be coming to San Francisco’s Golden State Theater playing a limited engagement from May 21 to June 19, 2011.
Starts September 13, 2011
“Billy Elliot” is the story of a young boy from the coal-mining community in Northern England and his struggle to follow his passion for dancing which he discovered by accident on his way home from a boxing training, despite his family and community’s disapproval for all things artsy. The musical will hit the road again for its second national tour beginning on November 2010 in Durham, NC. “Billy Elliot” is scheduled to dance its way to the Orpheum Theatre in San Francisco for a limited engagement in fall of next year which will open on September 13, 2011.
