Unless you’ve been living under a rock or totally out of tune to the world of theater, you know that Wicked has taken Broadway by storm, breaking countless sales records and is completely sold out for month in advance for its New York showings. Well its time for San Francisco to take back what is rightful theirs by welcoming Wicked back for an open ended engagement at the Orpheum Theatre. Wicked is the prequel to the Wizard of Oz and tells the story of Glinda and the Wicked Witch of the West and how everything came to be before Dorothy dropped in.

Peter Pan | threesixty Theatre

The classic story of Peter Pan received a revival on the stage by production company threesixty entertainment. The London based company opened the world of Peter Pan up to a mixture of actors and puppets, supported by a 360 degree set constructed from computer-generated imagery. This new interpretation initially debuted on the London stage last summer and will be making its official US groundbreaking at San Francisco’s threesixty Theatre at Ferry Park. The engagement opens April 27th and is set to play through August 29 at the threesixty.

Young Frankenstein | Golden Gate Theatre
Starts June 29th
In 1974, Mel Brooks speared the classic horror film Frankenstein with a rich parody starring Gene Wilder, and received the rare Oscar nod for a comedy for his efforts. Thirty-three years later, the successful translation of Brooks’ the Producers brought Young Frankenstein back to life on the Broadway stage. The production is now busily touring theaters throughout the country and is due to stop in on San Francisco’s Golden Gate Theatre from June 29 – July 25. Direction duties are handled by Susan Stroman and Mel Brooks himself are handling music and lyrics duties. Beauty and the Beast | Golden Gate Theatre

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast steals the magic of the Academy Award winning animated film and unravels it onto the stage. It hits San Francisco’s Golden Gate Theatre on August 17 – 29. When it left Broadway in 2007, it was the sixth-longest running production, and it was nominated for nine Tony Awards during its run. The musical has been witnessed in 115 cities across thirteen countries, making it a worldwide phenomenon. The musical tells the classic tale of the unlikely love that blossom between Belle and the Beast, complete with decadent set designs and costumes to marvel. Alan Menken, Time Rice and Howard Ashman provide the magical music and lyrics with direction by Rob Roth. Catch this modern day classic with the entire family.

Dream Girls | Curran Theatre

Before Dream Girls launched the career of Jennifer Hudson, it was a bright light on the Broadway stage in 1981, winning six Tony Awards after being nominated for fourteen. The musical sensation captures the rise of The Dreams, a Motown girl trio drawing inspiration of such R&B stars from the 1960s as The Supremes, James Brown, Jackie Wilson and The Shirelles. Dream Girls includes priceless hits like “One Night Only,” “Listen” and “And I Am Telling You” that will leave you singing long after the final curtain close. Robert Longbottom handles directing responsibilities, and Academy Award nominee Henry Kriger takes on music and lyrics. Dream Girls is heading to San Francisco’s Curran Theatre on August 24 – September 26.

West Side Story | Orpheum Theatre
Starts October 27th
The revival of Broadway’s classic West Side Story returns to the road to tour North America. Under the direction of Tony Award winner Arthur Laurents, West Side Story features the original choreography of Jerome Robbins and songs that have evolved into Broadway standards like “Tonight,” “America,” “Somewhere,” “Something’s Coming” and “I Feel Pretty.” The Broadway cast album from West Side Story took home the Grammy for Best Musical Show Album at the 2010 awards ceremony. Music for the production is by Leonard Bernstein (lyrics) and Stephen Sondheim (lyrics). West Side Story is set to take Wicked’s long-running spot at San Francisco’s Orpheum Theatre from October 27 through November 28.

Shrek | Orpheum Theatre
Starts December 1st
Drawn from the Oscar-winning animated film by DreamWorks studios, Shrek the Musical shines a spotlight on everyone’s favorite green ogre. This hilarious take on the Shrek fairy tale translates to the stage seamlessly and includes all your favorite characters from motor mouth donkey to spunky princess Fiona. The stage version was penned by David Lindsay-Abaire with 19 fresh songs provided by Janine Tesori. Shrek will keep the whole family laughing in stitches when it lands in San Francisco’s Orpheum Theatre this holiday season, playing from December 1 through January 2.
